Orlando Letelier Assassinated in Washington DC
Former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier and his American colleague Ronni Moffitt were killed by a car bomb in Washington DC on September 21, 1976. The assassination was ordered by Pinochet's DINA and carried out by Cuban exile operatives. FBI and CIA investigations were initially impeded by CIA's protection of DINA operative Michael Townley. The incident remains the worst act of foreign-sponsored terrorism on US soil prior to 9/11.
