Argentina 'Dirty War': US Backs Military Junta
The Argentine military overthrew elected President Isabel Perón on March 24, 1976, launching the 'Dirty War' (Guerra Sucia) that disappeared 30,000 people. Declassified documents show Secretary of State Henry Kissinger effectively greenlighted the junta's repression in a June 1976 meeting with Foreign Minister Guzzetti, telling him to 'get it over quickly.' The US maintained military and economic support throughout the junta's rule.
