San Bernardino Terror Attack — 14 Killed; FBI-Apple Encryption Battle Follows

| United States

Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik opened fire at a San Bernardino County holiday party on December 2, 2015, killing 14 and wounding 22. Malik had pledged allegiance to ISIS on Facebook during the attack. Both attackers were killed in a police confrontation 4 hours later. The attack triggered a landmark legal battle when the FBI sought Apple's help unlocking Farook's iPhone — Apple refused, arguing the precedent threatened all users' security. The FBI eventually paid over $1M to an outside firm to crack the phone.
