Obergefell v. Hodges — Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Obergefell v. Hodges that the Constitution's due process and equal protection clauses require all states to license and recognize same-sex marriages. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion. The ruling instantly legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The White House was illuminated in rainbow colors. A decade earlier, 11 states had passed constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage on the same day in 2004.
