Russian Guided Aerial Bombs Kill 27 Across Ukraine — Zaporizhzhia (12 Killed), Kramatorsk (6), Dnipro (4) Hit in Worst Single-Day Strike of 2026

| Ukraine

On the afternoon of May 5, 2026, Russia launched a massive wave of KAB guided aerial bombs (glide bombs) from Su-34 and Su-35 aircraft operating near the front line, killing at least 27 Ukrainians across multiple cities in the worst single-day casualty toll of 2026. In Zaporizhzhia, 12 civilians were killed and 43 injured — bombs struck a car repair workshop and residential buildings in what officials described as one of the worst single strikes on the city during the entire war. In Kramatorsk — the last major Ukrainian administrative hub in Donetsk Oblast — 6 people were killed and 12 wounded. In Dnipro, 4 civilians were killed. Strikes also hit Chernihiv, causing additional casualties. Russia launched a combined total of at least 254 guided aerial bombs and thousands of FPV kamikaze drones in the 24 hours to May 5. President Zelensky condemned Russia's 'utter cynicism' in targeting civilians just days before the competing ceasefire proposals were set to take effect. The strikes coincided with Russia's own unilateral Victory Day ceasefire declaration (May 8-9) and Ukraine's counter-proposal for an open-ended ceasefire beginning May 6, making the attacks a deliberate escalation immediately before both ceasefires.
