Ukraine Drones Knock Out Russia's Kirishi Oil Refinery — 7% of Russian Refining Capacity Halted in Leningrad Oblast Strike

| Ukraine

Ukrainian drones struck Russia's Kirishi oil refinery in Leningrad Oblast on May 5, 2026, forcing the facility to halt all processing operations. The Kirishi refinery — located approximately 100 km southeast of St. Petersburg — is Russia's second-largest oil refinery with a capacity of approximately 400,000 barrels per day, representing roughly 7% of Russia's total refining output. Drone strikes damaged three of four primary crude distillation units and several secondary processing units. A nearby fuel pumping station serving the Baltic port of Primorsk was also hit. The refinery issued an emergency shutdown and evacuation orders. The attack was part of a coordinated May 5 strike campaign by Ukraine that also included the Flamingo missile strike on the Cheboksary defense plant and a 289-drone barrage across multiple Russian regions. Ukraine has now struck Russian oil infrastructure more than 20 times in 2026, reportedly inflicting over $7 billion in losses. The Kirishi shutdown came just days after Ukraine's fourth strike on the Tuapse refinery (May 1) had already pushed Russia's average processing capacity to a 16-year low.
