Russia Launches 189 Combat Clashes and 86 Airstrikes on Day 1,554; Pokrovsk and Huliaipole Sectors Bloodiest
On May 28, 2026 — Day 1,554 of Russia's full-scale invasion — Ukraine's General Staff reported 189 combat clashes with Russian forces across all front sectors, along with 86 airstrikes and 1 missile strike. The Pokrovsk sector was the most contested with 46 separate attacks, with Russian forces pressing near Vilne, Novyi Donbas, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Shevchenko, Pokrovsk itself, Bilytske, Hryshyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia, and Novopavlivka. The Huliaipole sector recorded 32 attacks with fighting near Myrne, Dobropillia, Vozdvyzhivka, Hirke, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Rybne, Tsvitkove, Staroukrainka, Verkhnia Tersa, and Charivne. ISW noted that Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Velykyi Burluk and Oleksandrivka directions in northern Ukraine. Russia has suffered a net loss of 116 sq km in April 2026, its worst monthly performance since the start of the 2026 campaign. Despite the aerial terror campaign (May 23–27 mass strikes on Kyiv and other cities), Russia's frontline advance rate has fallen sharply in 2026. The Soufan Center assessed that Ukraine has regained effective drone advantage on the tactical battlefield for the first time since the 2023 counteroffensive.
