234 Combat Engagements in 24 Hours — 1,170 Russian Losses; Ukraine Advances in Hulyaipole Direction

| Ukraine War

Ukraine's General Staff reported 234 combat engagements across all frontline directions in the 24 hours ending May 17, 2026. The most active sectors were Pokrovsk (clashes near Zatyshok, Novooleksandrivka, Rodynske, Bilytske, Hryshyne, Serhiyivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolayivka, Novopavlivka), Kharkiv (near Izbytske, Ternova, Novovasylivka, Starytsa, Synelnykove, Vovchanski Khutory), and Kupyansk (near Kindrashivka, Radkivka). Ukrainian forces recorded an advance in the Hulyaipole direction in Zaporizhzhia Oblast — a tactically significant area where Russia has been pressing westward toward the provincial capital. Russian combat losses for the 24-hour period: 1,170 personnel killed or wounded. Cumulative Russian personnel losses since February 24, 2022 reached approximately 1,348,790. ISW noted that Russian command gave a 'highly inaccurate' battlefield assessment for the fifth consecutive month, falsely claiming advances west of Kupyansk. Ukraine also continued long-range strikes on Russian defense industrial infrastructure in Stavropol Krai.
