Ukraine Launches ~500-Drone Strike on Moscow — Largest Attack in Over a Year; 4 Killed, Oil Refinery Ablaze
In the overnight hours of May 16–17, 2026, Ukraine launched what Russian state media described as the 'largest drone attack on Moscow in over a year' — approximately 500 drones targeting the Moscow region and surrounding areas. At least 4 people were killed and 12+ wounded. Confirmed targets include the Moscow Oil Refinery (Kapotnya, Russia's largest single refinery), the Solnechnogorsk oil terminal north of Moscow, and the Elma technology park in Zelenograd, an electronics and defense-industry hub. Drone debris fell near Sheremetyevo International Airport without causing damage to the airport itself. Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed the strikes, calling them 'entirely justified' and noting that Ukrainian drones flew more than 500 km and successfully penetrated Russian air defenses. The attack follows Russia's record May 13–14 mass aerial assault (1,560+ drones and missiles) that killed 24 Ukrainians including 3 children. ISW and EMPR Media confirmed the strike as one of Ukraine's most significant attacks on Moscow in scope since the start of the full-scale invasion.
