Kakhovka Dam Destroyed; Catastrophic Flooding
The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam — the largest dam in Ukraine and a massive Soviet-era structure — was breached in an explosion, causing catastrophic flooding along the Dnipro River. Over 240 square miles were flooded; more than one million people lost drinking water access; dozens were killed. Evidence including water-flow analysis and testimony pointed to an explosion from within the dam structure on the Russian-controlled side. Russia blamed Ukraine.
