Syria Reaches Wheat Self-Sufficiency for First Time Since 2010

Syria's state Grain Establishment announced on August 6, 2026 that the country had received 2.7 million tons of wheat from this year's harvest, exceeding the annual national requirement of 2.55 million tons and meaning no wheat imports will be needed this season for the first time since before the war. Deputy general director Ahmed Qadoun said eastern Syria now accounts for more than 55% of national wheat cultivation, with the recovery driven by good rainfall, the return of farmland to production, and rehabilitated storage infrastructure and Agricultural Cooperative Bank financing — despite the UN calling 2025 the country's worst climate/drought year in decades.
