African Union Peace and Security Council Delegation Holds First Post-Coup Talks in Khartoum
An African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) delegation, representing the council's 15 member states and headed by Algeria's Permanent Representative to the AU Ambassador Mohamed Khaled (Algeria holding the council's rotating August presidency), held talks at the Republican Palace in Khartoum on Sunday, August 16, 2026 with Sovereign Council chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Kamil Idris, and Foreign Minister Mohi-Eddin Salem. It marked the AU PSC's first visit to Sudan since the military's October 2021 coup. The delegation stressed that lasting peace depends on Sudanese-led dialogue, national reconciliation, and a comprehensive political settlement, urged greater inclusiveness in the transitional process and progress toward constitutional governance, and voiced opposition to external interference and parallel governance structures. Discussions also covered reopening the AU Liaison Office in Khartoum and the government's return to normal operations in the capital. PM Idris separately urged the AU to support designating the RSF a terrorist organization and said the army was advancing in Greater Kordofan ahead of planned operations in Darfur.
