UN Warns Conflict, Displacement, and Cholera Are Deepening Sudan's Humanitarian Crisis
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said on July 28, 2026 that escalating conflict and intercommunal violence in Darfur have displaced more than 20,000 people in recent weeks, including 2,500+ residents who fled two villages in North Darfur's Ambro locality between July 20–23, most crossing into Chad. OCHA also reported Sudan has recorded over 2,000 suspected cholera cases and 170 deaths since May, with Kordofan accounting for most infections; UN partners are supporting nearly 80 disease surveillance sites, 16 treatment centres, and 8 oral rehydration points, reaching 270,000+ people with prevention campaigns. Sudan's 2026 humanitarian appeal remains only 40% funded ($1.1 billion of $2.9 billion required). The ICRC separately warned 'the price of inaction is increasing day by day.'
