UN Confirms 'Real and Credible Risk of Famine' in Burhakaba District

UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia George Conway confirmed a 'real and credible risk of famine' in Burhakaba district, Bay region — the first district-level famine-risk confirmation since the crisis began escalating. Conway said: 'The humanitarian context in Somalia is worsening faster than we originally projected. Children are paying the highest price... Without immediate and sustained support from donors, the diaspora and the private sector, we risk a preventable catastrophe unfolding before our eyes.' The 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan remained only 15.2% funded, with nearly 90% of people in need receiving little or no support, over 500 health and nutrition facilities closed for lack of funds, water-trucking costs more than doubled in some areas, and basic commodity prices up to 20% higher.
