Day 791: Two Detained After Gunfight with Security Forces During Attempted Land Rover Carjacking in Downtown Culiacán

Shortly before midnight on September 22, 2026, two suspects — ages 18 and 19 — attempted to steal a black four-door Land Rover Defender at gunpoint on Avenida Venustiano Carranza in downtown Culiacán. An Interinstitutional Group of federal and state security personnel conducting surveillance nearby moved in; the suspects opened fire on the officers, who returned fire under protocol, and the Land Rover overturned during the confrontation. Both suspects were detained, one wounded and treated at the scene. Authorities seized two firearms, including an AK-47-pattern rifle, three magazines and 72 rounds.
