Day 784: Mexico Deploys 3,400 More Troops and Agents to Sinaloa After US Citizen's Killing

On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced an additional 3,400 federal military and security personnel for Sinaloa, a day after a US citizen was shot dead in Mazatlán and the port recorded four homicides in a single day. The surge is composed of 1,600 Army troops (including 100 special forces, flown to Mazatlán aboard a Boeing 727) plus 1,000 Navy (Semar) elements and 836 additional SSPC federal agents (following 300 SSPC agents and 50 patrol units already sent to Mazatlán on September 13). García Harfuch said the deployment 'strengthens territorial presence, patrols, surveillance, prevention and deterrence,' with focus on Mazatlán, Culiacán and the state's main highways.
