Day 765: Sinaloa Femicide Count Reaches 71 for 2026; Prosecutor Flags Possible Narcomenudeo Link

Sinaloa State Attorney General Claudia Zulema Sánchez Kondo said the state has accumulated 71 femicides in 2026, with a marked increase in August concentrated in the southern municipalities of Mazatlán and Escuinapa (Culiacán still holds the highest cumulative case count). Sánchez Kondo said investigators have identified characteristics in several of the recent cases — including the locations and circumstances of the killings — that could point to a link with narcomenudeo (small-scale drug-dealing) activity, though she cautioned that no uniform conclusion has been reached and each case must be examined individually. The FGE separately reported three femicides and one homicide on Wednesday, August 26 alone: a body in Culiacán's Proyecto Alfa area, a woman in Escuinapa's El Roblito neighborhood, and two women in Mazatlán's Pradera Dorada II development. The prosecutor's office said it has stood up a new 'Unidad de Análisis y Contexto para la Violencia Feminicida' to study patterns across cases using a gender-based methodology.
