Sheinbaum Visits BSC; Mexico Confirmed to Host 2027 Summit in Defense of Democracy
Closing her Barcelona trip on April 19, Sheinbaum visited the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) — home of Europe's MareNostrum 5 supercomputer — meeting with Catalan President Illa, Science Minister Morant, and BSC Director Valero to deepen Mexico-Spain AI and scientific collaboration, building on a 40-year institutional partnership. During the visit she encountered legendary singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat and recognized him as 'a symbol of music and resistance.' Spanish PM Sánchez simultaneously announced that Mexico would host the 2027 Reunión en Defensa de la Democracia — the next progressive multilateral summit — following Sheinbaum's formal offer during the April 18 GPM meeting. Sheinbaum proposed the 2027 gathering focus on 'an economy centered on well-being.' The announcement marked Mexico's formal return to diplomatic multilateralism after years of AMLO-era self-isolation.
