GPM Summit Barcelona: Sheinbaum Joins Lula, Petro, Orsi, Sánchez in Global Progressive Mobilisation

| Sheinbaum (2024–)

President Sheinbaum participated on April 18 in the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM) summit at Barcelona's Fira Gran Via venue, joining approximately 3,000 registered participants from over 100 parties across five continents. The summit — promoted by Brazilian President Lula and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez — also brought together Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, European Council President António Costa, and former Swedish PM Stefan Löfven. The formal agenda addressed: defense of democratic institutions against rising authoritarian and far-right movements; regulation of digital platforms and disinformation; strengthening multilateral frameworks weakened under Trump; fighting economic inequality; and climate coordination. Sheinbaum held bilateral meetings with Sánchez (restoring full Mexico-Spain diplomatic relations after an eight-year estrangement), Lula (discussing the progressive coordination platform), and Petro (Latin American progressive bloc). Mexico-Spain ties were symbolically repaired after AMLO's 2019–2024 estrangement: the two governments agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a 'strategic partnership.' Sheinbaum was careful to characterize the summit as 'not anti-Trump,' emphasizing multilateralism over confrontation, as Mexico continues balancing its USMCA relationship with the United States.
