Mexico Confirmed to Host 2027 Summit in Defense of Democracy; Sheinbaum Formalizes Offer in Barcelona
As the IV Global Progressive Mobilisation summit in Barcelona concluded on April 18–19, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez formally announced that President Sheinbaum had offered Mexico as the host country for the 2027 Reunión en Defensa de la Democracia — the next edition of the multilateral progressive democracy summit. Sánchez welcomed the offer during his closing remarks and described it as a sign of Mexico's reinsertion into global multilateral governance. Sheinbaum proposed that the 2027 meeting center on 'an economy centered on well-being' and achieving democracy that 'responds to the true needs of peoples.' Multiple Latin American leaders, including Brazil's Lula and Colombia's Petro, backed Mexico's offer. Mexico's hosting of the event would mark a significant step in its re-engagement with international multilateralism after AMLO's relative isolationism, and would take place less than a year before Mexico's 2027 midterm elections. The Barcelona summit also adopted a joint declaration on defending democratic institutions, regulating disinformation on digital platforms, and strengthening multilateral frameworks weakened by nationalist governments.
