Pemex Gulf of Mexico Pipeline Leak Confirmed at Abkatun Field: 48 Beaches Affected, Officials Fired
Bloomberg reported on April 17 that a Pemex underwater pipeline at the Abkatun-A offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico — off the coast of Campeche — had been confirmed as the source of a hydrocarbon spill that soiled 48 beaches and killed marine wildlife. Internal investigations found that operational units had previously concealed evidence of the pipeline leak, falsely reporting no anomalies. Pemex confirmed it had fired three employees directly responsible for the unreported repairs and concealment. At least 915 tons of waste — a mixture of oil, sand, debris, and sargassum — were collected from coastal areas during cleanup operations. Environmental groups and opposition legislators demanded independent forensic investigations and questioned whether Pemex's operational safety culture had changed since the March 2026 Dos Bocas refinery explosion. The Abkatun incident is the second major Pemex environmental incident in less than 30 days. President Sheinbaum, traveling to Barcelona for the GPM summit, acknowledged the incident and stated the FGR would investigate potential criminal negligence.
