Sheinbaum Announces General Law on Femicide Prevention, Prosecution, and Reparation
President Sheinbaum announced at her Tuesday mañanera a new General Law to prevent, investigate, prosecute, and provide reparations for femicide crimes — addressing Mexico's ongoing gender violence crisis. The announcement was accompanied by a measure to translate the Women's Rights Charter into 67 Indigenous languages, expanding outreach to the country's most marginalized communities. The law comes as feminist organizations dispute official statistics: while the government reports a 12% decline in femicides, independent researchers note a 95% impunity rate and contend that thousands of killings are misclassified. Sheinbaum also rejected the possibility of a pardon for Mario Aburto, convicted assassin of PRI presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, calling it a matter of State.
