Sheinbaum Offers Mexico as Host for Iran's World Cup Matches
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico was prepared to host Iran's first-round soccer matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup if needed, citing Trump's statements that he could not ensure the security of the Iranian national team on U.S. soil. 'Mexico maintains diplomatic relations with every country in the world, therefore, we will wait to see what FIFA decides,' Sheinbaum said. Iran had been placed in Group E with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with games scheduled in Inglewood, California and Seattle. FIFA subsequently rejected Iran's request to move matches from the U.S., maintaining the tournament schedule unchanged.
