FAA Issues National Ground Stop Order

The Federal Aviation Administration orders a national ground stop, halting all civilian aircraft departures across the United States. This is the first such order in American aviation history. By 9:45 AM, the FAA orders all airborne civilian flights to land at the nearest airport, grounding approximately 4,500 planes already in the air.
