Report: Africa Corps Operations Drawing Civilian Abuse Allegations Across Mali
A report published April 1, 2026 documented widespread fear and insecurity in Malian communities where Russian Africa Corps personnel operate alongside Malian Armed Forces (FAMa). Malian civilians described abuse by Russian personnel, Malian army soldiers, and jihadist groups in operational areas — including extortion, arbitrary detention, and violence against civilians suspected of jihadist sympathies. The Africa Corps' rebranding from Wagner Group following Prigozhin's death in August 2023 left its command structure formally under Russian MoD/GRU control but operationally unchanged. The report adds to a pattern of civilian harm allegations in areas where Africa Corps is deployed, including Moura (March 2022), where Russian 'white soldiers' were witnessed by UN OHCHR investigators. Human rights organizations note that independent access to conflict zones where Africa Corps operates is severely restricted, making accountability virtually impossible under the current junta arrangement.
