Competing Russia-Ukraine Ceasefires Collapse Immediately

Both Russia's and Ukraine's unilateral ceasefires collapsed almost immediately after taking effect, with each side blaming the other for violations. Russia's ceasefire for May 8–9 began but Russian drone and missile attacks continued, while Ukraine struck targets in Crimea. Ukrainian forces carried out a strike against a Project 22800 Karakurt-class small missile ship at Russia's naval base in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, on the night of May 7. A large electrical substation in occupied Crimea caught fire overnight May 7–8 following a Ukrainian drone attack. The failures of both unilateral ceasefires set the stage for US President Trump to broker a three-way agreement.
