Trump Announces 3-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire and 1,000-Prisoner Exchange

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a three-day ceasefire beginning May 9, as well as an exchange of 1,000 prisoners by each side — the largest prisoner swap of the year. Trump stated: 'This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War.' Both Zelensky and Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed the agreement. The ceasefire was to run May 9–11, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day commemorations.
