ActionAid Ghana Launches Mangrove Restoration Project at Dzita, Anloga District

ActionAid Ghana, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity International and UN-Habitat, launched a mangrove restoration initiative at Dzita in the Anloga District of Ghana's Volta Region, reported July 9, 2026. The project, part of the wider Improved Resilience of Coastal Communities in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana (IRCC) Project funded by the Adaptation Fund, combines nature-based mangrove replanting with early-warning flood systems and livelihood support. Community planters and volunteers have already planted 95,300 mangrove seedlings across Atiteti, Agbledomi, and Dzita, part of a target of 410 hectares of degraded mangrove restored nationwide (110 hectares initially targeted in the Anloga area, with roughly 300 hectares mapped for expansion). Ghana's Forestry Commission noted mangroves serve as a powerful carbon sink capable of absorbing far more CO2 than ordinary trees. The initiative aims to create youth jobs, boost eco-tourism, and protect coastal communities from flooding and erosion amid rapid mangrove depletion — over 60% of Ghana's coastline is vulnerable to erosion.
