Indonesia Launches 2026–2028 Mangrove Promotion Strategy, Freeport Pledges 12,000 Hectares

On July 7, 2026, Indonesia's Ministry of Environment launched a national mangrove promotion strategy for 2026–2028, framing environmental 'carrying capacity' as the foundation for future development policy. Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat announced the strategy in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), calling for collective 'ecological repentance' from government, corporations, and communities alike. Roughly 700,000 hectares — about 30% of Indonesia's 3.4 million hectares of mangroves — are degraded from land conversion and industrial activity. As an early corporate benchmark, mining giant Freeport Indonesia pledged to rehabilitate approximately 12,000 hectares nationwide (10,000 ha in Papua, 2,000 ha across other coastlines) and reported completing 484 hectares of mangrove rehabilitation in NTB — its largest mangrove program outside Papua — using roughly 1.5 million Rhizophora seedlings planted with 1,500 local residents.
