Canada Commits $24.5M to Plant 5 Million Trees Across Saskatchewan

On July 7, 2026, Canada's federal government announced $24.5 million in funding for eight tree-planting projects across Saskatchewan under the 2 Billion Trees program, supporting the planting of more than 5 million trees. The largest single allocation — nearly $7.9 million — goes to the Kitsaki Management Limited Partnership (Lac La Ronge Indian Band) for boreal forest regeneration on wildfire-affected land, targeting 3.5–4 million trees. Other funded projects include the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan Home and Future Forest Project ($6.96M for 618,000 trees) and the Saskatchewan Woodland Caribou Habitat Restoration project ($6.35M to restore 350 hectares and plant 417,000 trees). The projects aim to restore wildfire-affected habitat, protect species at risk, and advance Indigenous-led reforestation, and were approved prior to the federal government's Budget 2025 announcement to wind down the 2 Billion Trees program.
