El Chapo Escapes Altiplano Prison Through 1.5 km Tunnel

Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán escaped from the Altiplano maximum-security federal prison (CEFERESO No. 1) in Almoloya de Juárez through a 1.5-kilometer tunnel equipped with lighting, ventilation, and a motorcycle rail system. The tunnel opened inside the shower stall of his cell. The escape was a catastrophic political scandal for the Peña Nieto government; Interior Secretary Osorio Chong survived calls to resign. A $100 million reward was issued for Chapo's recapture.
