Russia Resumes Kyiv Strikes as Three-Day Envoy Truce Expires, Killing at Least 5

September 8, 2026 — Hours after the three-day mutual capital-strike pause arranged around Witkoff and Kushner's shuttle visit expired, Russia launched a mass drone-and-missile barrage on Kyiv: Ukraine's air force reported 166 drones, 32 cruise missiles and an unspecified number of ballistic and anti-ship missiles, of which 142 drones, 31 cruise missiles and 2 ballistic missiles were intercepted. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least 5 people were killed and roughly 30 injured; a five-story apartment block in the Solomianskyi district and a TV channel building were hit, with fires reported across multiple districts. Two people were also killed in Russian strikes on Russian-annexed Crimea and one each in Russia's own Kursk and Bryansk regions. The resumption underscored the fragility of the mutual pause and came as the US envoys departed without a signed agreement.
