Quintet Mediators Make First-Ever Khartoum Visit, Opening Three-Day Sudan Political Talks

September 8, 2026 — Representatives of the 'Quintet' (the African Union, United Nations, IGAD, League of Arab States and European Union) arrived in Khartoum for their first-ever joint visit to Sudan since the SAF-RSF war began in April 2023, opening three days (through Sept 10) of direct political consultations with Sudanese parties on the conflict and prospects for a civilian-led political transition. UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Sudan Pekka Haavisto joined the mission, meeting Transitional Sovereignty Council chairman Burhan, the prime minister, the foreign minister and civil society representatives, and telling officials a negotiated settlement 'remained the only viable path' to a comprehensive ceasefire; discussions covered civilian protection, de-escalation measures and detainee releases. UN deputy spokesman reiterated 'the importance of reaching a negotiated settlement to this conflict that reflects the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people.' The mission builds on the AU's Aug 30-31 endorsement of a Sudanese-led national dialogue.
