AU Peace and Security Council Delegation Meets Burhan, PM Idris in Khartoum

| Peace Processes

August 16, 2026 — Sovereignty Council chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Foreign Minister Mohi-Eddin Salem hosted the visiting African Union Peace and Security Council delegation at the Republican Palace, a day after the 15-member-state delegation (headed by Algeria's AU envoy Mohamed Khalid, holder of the Council's August presidency) arrived in Khartoum. The delegation, which separately met Prime Minister Kamil Idris, described the talks as 'fruitful,' voiced concern over the war's mounting casualties and humanitarian toll, and urged inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation toward eventual elections. Both sides welcomed steps toward reopening the AU's Khartoum liaison office, a symbolic marker of deepening AU engagement on the Sudan file alongside Burhan's Aug 15 pledge of temporary immunity for participants in a proposed national dialogue.
