Lebanon-Israel Pentagon Security Track 2 Days Away (May 29); 10,000+ UNIFIL Violations Since April 16 Ceasefire; IDF Withdrawal vs. Hezbollah Disarmament Impasse Persists

| Peace Processes

May 27, 2026 — The Lebanon-Israel Pentagon security track meeting is two days away (scheduled for May 29), marking the first military-to-military bilateral meeting of the Lebanon-Israel direct talks process. The 45-day ceasefire extension agreed during Round 3 Washington talks (May 15-16) remains in force with the next critical deadline approximately June 29. However, UNIFIL has logged over 10,000 violations since the ceasefire began April 16, and 657+ people have been killed in the period — an extraordinary casualty figure under a nominal ceasefire framework. Israeli airstrikes near Tyre and Nabatieh (May 18-19) wounded dozens and damaged the Hiram Hospital and a primary health center, prompting UN international humanitarian law warnings. The May 29 Pentagon meeting agenda is expected to focus on the core unresolved issues: IDF withdrawal timeline from southern Lebanon, Lebanese Armed Forces deployment to the south and financing for their military capacity building, Hezbollah south-Litani disarmament verification, and enforcement mechanisms for ceasefire compliance. Hezbollah remains opposed to the direct talks framework (excluded from negotiations), continues to demand indirect negotiations only, and called on the Lebanese government to withdraw from the Washington talks in May. The political track follows June 2-3 in Washington. The Soufan Center assessed as of May 22 that 'the conflict grinds on' despite the ceasefire extension, with the structural impasse between IDF withdrawal and Hezbollah disarmament remaining unresolved. Lebanon's PM Nawaf Salam and President Joseph Aoun are continuing the direct talks framework over Hezbollah's objections.
