Early Coral Bleaching Confirmed in the Florida Keys as El Niño-Driven Marine Heat Builds
On July 12, 2026, USGS coral scientist Dr. Lauren Toth documented and photographed pale and bleached starlet coral (Siderastrea siderea) and lobed star coral (Orbicella annularis) at Newfound Harbor, an inshore patch reef in the Lower Florida Keys — visible confirmation that bleaching-level heat stress had reached the Keys reef tract during what has been an exceptionally hot 2026 summer. NOAA Coral Reef Watch's satellite bleaching alert system showed Alert Level 1 conditions across most of coastal Florida, including the Keys, as El Niño conditions officially strengthened through the Northern Hemisphere summer following NOAA's confirmation of onset in early June.
