Analysis: North Korea Earned $13–14 Billion From Russia Alliance — Equivalent to Half of DPRK's GDP
Ukrainian and Japanese intelligence analyses published on May 11, 2026 estimated that North Korea earned approximately $13–14 billion from its military cooperation with Russia — comprising arms deliveries (over 1 million artillery shells, Hwasong-11 short-range ballistic missiles) and the deployment of approximately 15,000 troops, compensated through Russian energy transfers, cash payments, and military technology sharing. The estimated total is equivalent to roughly half of DPRK's estimated annual GDP of $28 billion. The revenue stream has materially altered DPRK's economic outlook, partly offsetting sanctions-induced foreign currency shortfalls. The Nikkei Asia and Kyiv Post separately confirmed the scale, noting that Russian energy payments — including petroleum products — constitute the single largest component. The windfall has allowed Kim Jong-un to accelerate both nuclear modernization and social spending domestically, reducing the trade-offs that had historically constrained North Korean military investment.
