Seven US allies — including the UK — announced in a joint statement their support for a potential coalition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial ships and oil tankers. Japan joined at the last minute. However, the statement included no commitment to send naval vessels or other resources and was described by analysts as largely a gesture to placate President Trump. UK diplomacy had been driving the effort to assemble the broadest possible statement of political support short of military commitment.
