UN Secretary-General Warns Myanmar Crisis Risks 'Slipping From Global Attention' at UNGA

Addressing the opening of the General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly session on September 22, 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the crisis in Myanmar is at risk of slipping from the world's attention despite escalating violence, mass displacement and expanding transnational crime spilling across its borders. Guterres grouped Myanmar with the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan as crises where declared ceasefires have often amounted to little more than 'lesser fires,' with civilians continuing to pay the price.
