Artillery Shell Kills 5-Year-Old, Injures 11 at Village Football Field in Kyaikto Township

An artillery shell exploded at approximately 11am on August 19, 2026 at a village football field in Zeepyaung Village, Thein Za Yat Town, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, during a rainy-season football match. A 5-year-old kindergarten student was killed and 11 civilians were injured, four critically; the seriously wounded were transferred to Bago General Hospital. Residents said junta troops frequently conduct military operations and indiscriminate artillery shelling in the area, which is administered by Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 1.
