SAC Jets and Navy Shell Sanae Township, Kyaukphyu District — 100+ Homes Destroyed, 50,000+ Displaced as AA Advances on Chinese-Backed Port
Myanmar junta forces conducting sustained aerial and naval bombardment of Sanae Township in Kyaukphyu District, Rakhine State — where the Arakan Army is actively advancing on Myanmar's most strategically sensitive port — according to CDM documentation for May 21, 2026. SAC aircraft bombed Shwe Hintha Ward in Sanae town, destroying at least 100 homes and forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee from more than ten villages in the surrounding area. Naval vessel shelling by junta warships caused additional civilian casualties. The AA is simultaneously advancing on Kyaukphyu — the site of China's $7.3-billion deep-sea port project, natural gas pipeline terminal, and Special Economic Zone under the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). Heavy ground clashes are ongoing near Thaingchaung and Zaichaung villages approximately 10 miles south of Kyaukphyu town. The junta deployed jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft in multiple strike waves against AA positions and civilian areas in the Kyaukphyu-Sanae corridor. Earlier in May 2026, the AA repelled a junta amphibious assault from Taungmawgyi naval base, blocking landing craft attempting to reinforce Sanae town via the Thanzit River. AA forces report surrounding approximately 50,000 civilians displaced from the Sanae area face urgent humanitarian needs with roads cut. The Kyaukphyu offensive has major geopolitical implications: Chinese investments and personnel at the deep-sea port have prompted Beijing to signal concern, while China's protection of its CMEC interests was a factor in its recent diplomatic engagement with both the SAC (Wang Yi's April 2026 Naypyidaw visit) and resistance EAOs. The AA controls approximately 90% of Rakhine State and is the only major EAO whose operations directly threaten Chinese-flagged infrastructure in Myanmar.
