Pauk Township Displacement Crisis: ~8,000 Residents Flee 14 Villages as Junta Forces Advance with Artillery, Drones, and Airstrikes (Magway Region)

| Myanmar

Approximately 8,000 residents have fled 14 villages in Pauk Township, Magway Region, since May 1, 2026, as junta forces advance in a sustained ground offensive backed by heavy artillery, drone bombings, and airstrikes, according to a Mizzima report published May 16, 2026. The newly displaced — approximately 5,000 people from 11 villages including Palaung, Mya Pan, Khin Aye, Kyauk Mae Taung, Kyauk Da Gar, Yaw Kone, Ma Kyi Kone, Nat Sin Kone, Ta Pin, Htan Pin Chaung, and Ohn Min — join roughly 24,000 people from 52 villages already in long-term displacement in the area prior to this latest offensive. The major escalation in displacement occurred on May 11, when the junta column advanced south of the Ka Pa Sa-24 facility (a local military position) and conducted simultaneous heavy artillery bombardment, drone strikes, and airstrikes on the surrounding area. The PDF fighting back reported that in a May 7 ambush before the major advance, seven junta soldiers were killed and at least 30 were wounded, with one resistance fighter dying — indicating the junta's Pauk advance proceeded despite significant resistance losses inflicted on SAC forces. The Pauk Township humanitarian crisis operates in tandem with the broader junta Magway offensive: the adjacent Saw Town was occupied by junta forces on approximately May 15-16, 2026, with over 20 young men arrested at junta positions. The displacement of thousands more in Pauk Township is part of the SAC's strategy of depopulating resistance-aligned areas through combined ground incursions and aerial bombardment, denying the PDF civilian support and logistics. Displaced civilians are sheltering in forests and temples without adequate food, water, or medicine during the hottest months of the year, when temperatures in central Myanmar regularly exceed 40°C.
