820+ Chin State Civilians Flee to India's Mizoram Between May 11-13 as Junta Prepares Offensive on Rikhawdar Border Town — Tedim and Tonzang Residents Evacuate

| Myanmar

At least 820 internally displaced persons from Chin State crossed into India's Mizoram state between May 11-13, 2026, triggered by reports that the Myanmar military junta was preparing an offensive to retake the Rikhawdar border town and the Khawmawi village area on the India-Myanmar Trade Camp No. 2 route, according to a Mizzima report published May 16, 2026. The displaced individuals came from Tedim Township, Tonzang Township, the Falam-Hakha road region, and Hualngoram near the Mizoram border — all areas that have seen escalating junta operations following the SAC's recapture of Falam (April 25-26) and Kennedy Peak in Tedim Township (May 7). A local resident told Mizzima that the official figure of 820 'reflects only those who officially registered through the Friendship Bridge,' with actual numbers 'likely at least double that.' Displaced persons registered with Indian military and police authorities and are housed with relatives or in rented accommodations in Mizoram. Local organizations have contingency plans to shelter additional arrivals. Rikhawdar is Myanmar's northernmost trade hub with India in Chin State, strategically located on the India-Myanmar border in Tedim Township at the end of the Kalay-Tedim road. Chin resistance forces — particularly the Chinland Defence Force and allied PDF units — have held Rikhawdar since November 2023 following a significant offensive, making it one of the most important resistance-controlled border crossings with India. The junta's post-Falam offensive has been systematically pushing northward: from Falam (recaptured April 25-26), through Kennedy Peak (recaptured May 7), and now toward Tedim and Rikhawdar. The scale of refugee flight into Mizoram is significant: over 30,000 Myanmar refugees are already sheltering in Mizoram from earlier conflict waves, with 7,000+ in Zokhawthar village specifically. Another 150+ refugees had crossed into Mizoram's Champhai District on May 1 after the SAC dropped 500-pound bombs on villages near the Mizoram border. India's response capacity in Mizoram is under sustained strain from the ongoing conflict.
