KIA Landmine Ambush Kills ~40 Pro-Junta Militia in Hpakant — Major Single-Action Losses for SAC

| Myanmar

At approximately 8:00 AM on April 19, 2026, Kachin Independence Army (KIA) forces conducted a landmine ambush on a pro-junta militia column in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, killing approximately 40 militia members. The ambush struck a militia patrol in the same area that has seen sustained KIA-SAC fighting since April 11, following KIA's capture of six SAC frontline positions near Maw Wan Gyi on April 2. Pro-junta militia units deployed in Hpakant — Border Guard Force-affiliated fighters and locally recruited auxiliaries — have increasingly been thrown into combat as the regular SAC suffers attrition from sustained KIA operations. The loss of ~40 militia in a single engagement is among the highest single-action casualty counts in Hpakant in 2026 and represents a significant degradation of the junta's militia network in Kachin. Hpakant generates an estimated $2–3 billion annually in jade revenue for the junta, making sustained KIA operations there both militarily and economically devastating to SAC capacity.
