Min Aung Hlaing Elected 11th President of Myanmar — 429 of 584 Votes

| Myanmar

On April 3, Myanmar's military-dominated parliament elected junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as Myanmar's 11th President, receiving 429 of 584 votes cast. Nyo Saw (the junta's current Prime Minister, chosen by the military bloc) and Nan Ni Ni Aye were confirmed as the two vice-presidents. Inauguration was scheduled for the following week. The election completed the junta's carefully orchestrated 'civilianization' maneuver: Min Aung Hlaing had retired as Commander-in-Chief on March 30 to meet the 2008 constitution's civilian candidacy requirement, handed command to loyalist General Ye Win Oo, then was elected vice-president on April 1 before the full presidential vote on April 3. Western governments, the NUG, and international human rights organizations condemned the election as a sham designed to provide the SAC with a civilian veneer to pursue ASEAN and international re-engagement while retaining full military control. The National Unity Government (NUG) called the process illegitimate and urged states not to recognize Min Aung Hlaing's presidential authority.
