PRD Founded — Cárdenas Builds the Left
Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas united the coalition that had run against Salinas into the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), merging the PSUM, PMS, and Corriente Democrática. The PRD positioned itself as the democratic left, combining social democracy with Mexican nationalism. It became the dominant left party for the next 25 years, winning Mexico City and multiple states before being eclipsed by Morena.
