Carranza Assassinated — Obregón Takes Power, Revolution Concludes

President Venustiano Carranza, attempting to impose an ally as his successor against popular general Álvaro Obregón, was forced to flee Mexico City when Obregón's forces rose against him. Carranza was assassinated on May 21, 1920, in the hamlet of Tlaxcalantongo, Puebla — shot in his sleep in a hut. Obregón became president in December 1920, and his administration is generally considered the end of the armed phase of the Revolution and beginning of reconstruction.
