Zapata Assassinated at Chinameca — Agrarian Movement Decapitated

| Mexico

Emiliano Zapata was lured to the Chinameca hacienda in Morelos on April 10, 1919 with false promises of a defection by Carrancista colonel Jesús Guajardo. An honor guard opened fire as Zapata entered; he was shot and killed. His body was displayed publicly in Cuautla to prove his death. Zapata was 39. His assassination, ordered by President Carranza, effectively ended the Zapatista movement as a military force. Zapata became Mexico's most iconic revolutionary martyr.
