Porfirio Díaz Resigns and Goes into Exile After 35 Years

After the Battle of Ciudad Juárez (May 8–10, 1911) — won by Villa and Orozco's forces — the Treaty of Ciudad Juárez obliged Díaz to resign. On May 25, 1911, the 80-year-old dictator boarded the SS Ypiranga at Veracruz bound for Europe. His reported farewell: 'Madero ha soltado un tigre, veremos si puede controlarlo' ('Madero has unleashed a tiger, let's see if he can control it'). Díaz died in Paris in 1915 and is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery — his remains were never returned to Mexico.
