Army of the Three Guarantees Enters Mexico City — Independence Proclaimed

On September 27, 1821 — exactly 300 years after the fall of Tenochtitlán — the Army of the Three Guarantees entered Mexico City and the Act of Independence of the Mexican Empire was signed. Iturbide was proclaimed its leader. After 11 years of war, the Spanish Viceroy Juan O'Donojú had signed the Treaty of Córdoba (August 24, 1821) recognizing independence. Mexico became the largest independent nation in the Americas after the United States.
